Philippe Thuriot

The Belgian accordionist Philippe Thuriot has been playing on the international stages for 25 years. He was born in Brussels and completed his musical studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he was taught by Mogens Ellegaard.

As a musician, Phillipe cannot be described in one sentence. He has very wide interests, going from Jazz to improvisation and classical music.

He collaborated on La Tristeza Complice (1996) and Pitié (2008). Two dance performances by Les Ballets C de la B, the international dance company of Alain Platel. The result was more than 200 performances through Europe, the USA, Brazil and Congo.

He played together with Steve Houben, Charles Loos, Aka Moon, Tcha Limberger, Ellery Eskelin, René Lussier and Uri Caine. All masters in the international jazz world.

Philippe Thuriot was also invited to play in chamber concerts and / or orchestras together with ensembles as Brussels Philharmonic, Oxalys, Het Collectief (works composed and conducted by Johannes Schöllhorn and Reinbert De Leeuw), Il Gardellino (conducted by Marcel Ponseele), Ictus, Klangforum Wien with the world creation of the Pinocchio Opera by P. Boesmans / J. Pommerat in Aix-en-Provence, Brussels (De Munt), Dijon and Bordeaux.

In 2015, he recorded the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach for the Warner Classics / Klara label. This recording obtained internationally a favourable review. He performed at numerous international festivals as Bachelona in Barcelona and Crete Senesi in Tuscany, in honour of the 70th birthday of Philippe Herreweghe.

At the same time, he revised the Goldberg Variations for the dance performance Sehnsucht by Koen Augustijnen and the Mainz State Theatre.

In 2018, Philippe is one of the guests of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra. He will be on tour with the music of Maria Schneider.

In the meantime, two new CD recordings are under construction. In January 2018, the compositions of Philippe Thuriot will be played by his jazz trio 3 men in a boat. In June, he will release a new solo record with music of Maurice Ravel and François Couperin. For this purpose, he is making some arrangements of La Valse, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Alborada del Gracioso and the Menuet Antique. Very unique on accordion. (Warner Classics)

Other future projects are Der Winterreise by F. Schubert with the Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn, a world creation of the accordion concerto dedicated to him by Peter Vermeersch (BE), in collaboration with the Flanders Symphony Orchestra and a collaboration with the American jazz violinist Mark Feldman.
