Two energetic works by young composers open Saturday’s programme, including a real discovery!
Rebecca Clarke was born in England, the daughter of an American father and German mother, and was one of the first female composition students at the Royal College of Music in London. She won top prizes in renowned composition competitions in America and England, in which the identity of the entrants remained strictly anonymous!
This award-winning piano trio, written at the age of 25, is an extraordinary work, completely original and composed with masterful craftsmanship. It reflects some of the most modern influences of the time: an impressionistic atmosphere reminiscent of Ravel and Debussy, and free, declamatory passages evoking the language of Bloch. To be discovered!
The child prodigy Mendelssohn wrote extraordinary works at a young age, in which the musical élan and effervescent energy bear witness to his youthful spirit. This quintet, written at the age of 17, is no exception. Sparkling and with the quicksilver writing characteristic of Mendelssohn’s style, this uplifting and exuberant music is an ideal start to a long concert weekend!
