“The grand finale...”

In this closing concert, you will hear two absolute highlights from the chamber music repertoire!

Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 44 in E major is a magnificent example of his late trios from his London period, in which he demonstrates enormous harmonic imagination, piano virtuosity and surprising structural shifts. Although the work is pure chamber music, it is sometimes considered a “piano sonata with accompaniment”: a pianist can give free rein to his imagination here… tailor-made for Alasdair Beatson!

Schubert’s String Quintet in C major is one of the most impressive masterpieces of chamber music – and one of his last works, completed just weeks before his death at the age of 31. It is unusually composed for two violins, viola and two cellos. The added cello deepens the sound world and gives the music a dark, glowing resonance that distinguishes it from quintets with two violas.
The cello quintet, which is alternately intimate and monumental, feels like a farewell that embraces both the beauty and fond memories as well as the pain of life – a final expression from a composer at the height of his expressive powers.

A worthy conclusion to the Resonances Festival.
